Our aim in offering this course is to support counsellors and coaches to
develop the knowledge, practical skills and confidence to facilitate
effective and engaging groups.
By the end of this course you will be able to apply a knowledgeable, ethical,
integrated and reflective approach to group facilitation.
Throughout the course you'll learn how we came to where we are today,
who has been important in the history of group work (Irvin Yalom,
Yvonne Agazarian, Rogers and others). More recent theories such as attachment
and interpersonal neurobiology as well as polyvagal theory help us to
understand what is going on in the groups that we run today.
During the course you will be invited to critically analyze group theory and explore research of groups, alongside developing a use of self within the group context. This will support the development of effective and inclusive group processes, regardless of the type of group you are facilitating. You will build the competence, confidence and professional judgement to work autonomously facilitating groups across diverse settings.
There are 7 x 2-day workshops (Friday and Saturday monthly) that are tutor led, live online beginning in September 2027:

October 15th & 16th
November 19th & 20th
December 10th & 11th
January 14th &15th 2028
February 11th & 12th
March 10th & 11th
These workshops will contain theory, experiential learning, group skills practice and discussion groups.
There are a number of books which are essential to read alongside the course (once enrolled the scheme of work will highlight the reading alongside the session topics) The important books for the course will be highlighted in the reading list.
As this is a level 6 Diploma there is an expectation that students engage in reading and research to support your learning, the writing of assignments and to contribute to topics explored throughout the training.
To complete the course successfully you will need to
evidence:
12 hours of group facilitation experience
7 hours of supervision specifically for group
facilitation
Assessment is an internally assessed portfolio of evidence.
one essay, one case presentation and case study,
reflective journals, peer and tutor observed skills of group facilitation.
